BADABAMBOU
How it's made

How are our bamboo straws made?

At Badabambou, we offer 100% natural, artisanal alternatives to replace the industrial products found in mainstream supply chains. Accredited by SGS, our bamboo straws are certified and comply with European standard EN1230-2. We import our bamboo straws directly from artisans, to offer competitive prices and maximise our social impact.

Our mission as a bamboo straw wholesaler? To champion craftsmanship, put nature back at the heart of what's human, and bring natural, accessible solutions to restaurateurs while fairly paying local artisans.

Bamboo straws are simply bamboo stems cut between the nodes. They need no processing at all, making them a staple in the eco-responsible world! At Badabambou, we use bamboo from Vietnam, which offers the best straw quality: Pseudosasa japonica, also found across East Asia.

This non-invasive bamboo has long stems with widely spaced nodes, allowing straws to be cut between each node. It needs a lot of humidity, which is why this bamboo thrives particularly well in Vietnam: the country's weather conditions are ideal for stem growth, giving you extremely resistant bamboo straws.

While the bamboo straw needs no processing, genuine know-how is required to produce sturdy, pleasant-to-use straws. Let's now look at the bamboo straw manufacturing process!

1

Stem selection

First step: harvesting the bamboo. Artisans use 'pseudosasa japonica' bamboo and only gather stems aged 2 years. This way, the straws will be sufficiently resistant and thin.

The selected bamboo stems are then cut and sun-dried, then gathered for storage.

2

Polishing the canes

The bamboo canes are polished, to remove dust and leave the stems smooth and shiny.

3

Cutting

Depending on our customers' needs, bamboo straws are cut to a length between 12 and 25 cm.

4

Sanding the ends

Due to the burns caused by the blade, the ends of the straw turn black. Using a machine, the artisan must abrade both ends of the freshly cut bamboo straw. This step produces a smooth, shiny straw at the ends.

5

High-pressure wash

A first wash with water is carried out to remove all dust. A high-pressure pump is used, guaranteeing optimal cleaning.

6

Natural drying

The bamboo straws are then left out in the sun for a first drying stage, until there's no moisture left at all.

7

Purification by boiling

The next step is to boil the bamboo straws in water diluted with baking soda. The goal here is to eliminate all mould, bacteria or fungus, and to destroy living cytoplasm to ensure this mould never comes back.

8

Final machine drying

After boiling, the artisans carry out a third sun-drying stage until the bamboo straws are no longer damp. To make sure the straws are properly dry at the end of the cleaning process, they're machine-dried.

9

Laser engraving

The final step, and certainly the most important one for you! Thanks to a high-performance laser machine, your logo is engraved on the bamboo straws. This final step adds real value to this 100% natural straw, which you can personalise as you wish.

This laser technique offers a clean, precise finish, for graphic designs just as well as fine lettering. An eco-responsible product you can fully make your own, to stand out in the hospitality industry!
